Transportation: How Transport Works - Introduction
Worsley and Boothstown Transportation Task Group                                                INDEX                    HOME

Welcome to Transportation: How Transport Works

In July 2007 we published a comprehensive picture of how transport works, Transportation: the Big Picture. We are now updating it and it will grow and expand to be a more comprehensive guide to how transport works. We are not intending to go into any theoretical study but give you an outline of what makes transport tick and what is important.

If you have recently been invited to look at this website or you have decided to help the Transportation Task Group bring about change in the way transport works in Worsley, Boothstown and Ellenbrook then this is your introduction.

As ever we will be making this available on paper to those who do not have access to a computer, or those who do not have access on a regular basis, or would prefer to read from paper. Please contact us through this website - the email address is at the bottom of this page - or though the other contact points.

Introduction

This is a compilation of extracts of current documents to try to bring to you a better understanding of the transportation issues as they affect or may affect Greater Manchester, the City of Salford and Worsley, Boothstown and Ellenbrook, our communities and importantly you and your family.

We are not expecting you to read this compilation but you may find it helpful in understanding how it all works. on the home page is a link to a “jargon-buster” that may help you to unravel the jargon, acronyms and mnemonics that some people use.

It is stressed that some of these papers may be dynamic documents and may have been amended since their publication or, in the case of approved documents, they may have been amended by the approving body and the published version may not be accurate. Some internal editing and compacting has taken place to remove technical language or superfluous repetition.

Other than locally produced papers, denoted by “(WBCC) or (wbttg)”, all documents have been captured from internet sources. These sources have recently (January 2008) been rechecked and will be thoroughly checked and a date stamp placed on them in the coming months.

Throughout these papers further information can be found on the internet through the given addresses. In some cases instead of providing websites, start from the google home page (www.google.co.uk) and just key in EXACTLY the words, numbers, symbols and spaces in the [square brackets] the search will be found in the first few entries, for example [highways+area10].

Over time these informal quick steps are liable to change, but they will be kept as up to date as possible. It is our intention to use these quick steps as much as possible as they will probaly be the quickest way to get to a given website page if you are reading the information off paper and want to refer to the website page for more information.

You will notice that as this site expands more of these quick steps will have a direct link to the exact pages. The example above does not have a direct link behind it.

Normally, your method of using "How Transport Works" is through the index page and you may never need to visit here again. However, there may be background introductory information placed here in future. An alert will be placed at the top of this page to draw your attention the new material added. There is an example at the top now.
