Leigh Salford Manchester Bus Rapid Transit
Formerly called the Leigh Guided Busway [gmpte+409693], this is part of a public transport network that is being developed across Greater Manchester including Quality Bus Corridors [gmpte+1278538], Metrolink [metrolink] and the local rail lines.
This is a key part of the Greater Manchester transport strategy - promoted jointly by all ten District Councils and the Passenger Transport Authority.
Improving public transport achieves wider economic, social and environmental objectives that will benefit everyone. In particular, improved public transport in the Leigh-Salford-Manchester corridor will give easier and quicker access by public transport to a wide range of jobs and training opportunities. The long-term result should be to strengthen the local economies of these areas and create new jobs.
The benefits of the Leigh - Salford - Manchester Quality Bus Corridor [gmpte+409693] will be;
Reliable and frequent bus services, Modern, comfortable, low pollution buses, 17 stops, accessible for all. Journey between Tyldesley and Leigh cut to just 8 minutes, Journey between Leigh and the City Centre cut to 40 minutes. New, better recreational path for walkers, cyclists and horse riders.Creation of a Country Park with Ranger Service.
GMPTE has examined many possible alternatives to the guided busway, including new rail lines and stations, Metrolink, and alternative bus schemes. However, none of these would deliver the same benefits for travellers as the proposed scheme.
Worsley and Boothstown Transportation Task Group are reproducing this information in good faith and the content may not represent our opinion. The scheme was originally proposed in 1998 for implimentation by 2007. It has not yet secured funding and now forms part of the Transportation Innovation Fund bid by GMPTE. It is unlikely to be completed before 2012.
